Batik and Borobudur

Time to close April 2013 \^.^/

I think I will start with some of question words. When? Where? How? What? Why? No! That’s not Indonesian Language lesson for making a good paragraph. Those are the questions that I really need to be answered in my life. Well, I guess you will never know what’s going to happen next.

Sometime, I feel like I’m the luckiest person alive, to be given different and wonderful opportunities :)

When I was in 4^th term, I don’t remember the date exactly. I had a great chance to accompany professor and students from Chubu University, Japan. They were doing some research about Indonesian teenager in Yogyakarta. The research was mostly done within the Faculty of Cultural Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Just as I thought, they came not only for the research but also to have fun in their spare time. Well, I was a lucky second grader to have been assigned with my seniors, whose skill is far beyond my reach, to accompany them. That time, one of my sensei asked me “Sansan, could you accompany Aoki sensei and his students to have some tour around Yogyakarta?” That was an unforgettable request. Of course because I didn’t want to miss the chance, I answered “Yes, I can” with cheerful smile ((:

The first trip was to visit the Batik factory located at Kaliurang. Just for information, on October 2, 2009, UNESCO designated Indonesian Batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Only in the late 19^th century that this art began to reach its finest form in Java, Indonesia, my beloved country!  Thus Indonesian Batik has become very popular throughout the world.

That was one of the most exciting moments in my life, to have the chance to learn about Batik. Batik is a complex art of drawing and dyeing on fabric, and not as simple as your everyday printing. The word Batik derived from Javanese words for ‘writing’ and ‘dots’, which is the art of drawing beautiful patterns with canting and melting wax. The first step is drawing a pattern on the fabric with pencil. By using canting and melting wax, we produce the color by re-draw the pattern on the ones drawn earlier. The wax part on fabric will remain white. That’s how to make one-colored Batik. For two colored-three colored (or more) Batik, you need to dry the fabric and cover all the part with the melting wax, except the part you want to dye. More colors means you need to repeat the methods, and will take a lot of time to make it. That is why handmade Batik worth the price because it’s made by traditional Batik artist and totally different from a modern fabric-printing with Batik motives.

The second day we went to Borobudur. It’s located at Magelang, Central Java. Borobudur is the oldest Buddhist temple and one of the 7 wonders of the world. The view was so wonderful, that was my second time visiting Borobudur since my high school trip. It remains wonderful despite the incoming heat wave from the sun at the noon.

After we got tired walking around Borobudur, and of course after the photo session with various poses, we went to grab some grub. We went to Jejamuran where all the food made from mushroom, start from tongseng, satay, etc. The foods were really tasty and delightful. Maybe because I was too hungry I forgot to take the picture of the foods. For the dinner we went to Pizza Hut. Yummy :9

That’s my exciting days with the good Professor and his friendly students. I learnt many things from Japanese language to Japanese people characteristic. Next time I will tell you about my other experiences with Japanese people.  See you on next post :))

How to write Japanese email properly

So tonight is the night. Wow, every week's just getting faster and faster. Isn't it? Here I am laying on my bed, with my laptop and at very comfy position :)) By the way, I write this by the advice of a certain reader who always supported me. Well, this is about the basic structure of e-mail. 

Basically the structure of Japanese e-mail are like written below.

4. 本文   (Main Content) 

    The part where you write the main content.

    When you want to tell about information you can itemize them one by one (a.g. : time, place, or such).

5. むすび (Ending)

    The part written at the end of the mail. Consists of closing greeting and such.

My Precious Someone :)

Thank God it's Sunday :)) I don't get why people hate Mondays. Actually, I always look forward to Mondays because I think of it as the beginning of a new week, so I can start new and fresh !! 

Well, this time I want to tell you one thing or two about someone that taught me the importance of dream.

I don’t have to spend my precious time looking for celebrity, hero, or even president cause I have him as inspiring figure. He always brought me along in his venture inside the imagination of the future. He also tends to express the great dreams of him only just to share those to me. There are many things about life that I learnt from him. He is a hard worker, and never looking down upon the time. I remember the time he said “I don’t want to waste my productive time on the way. If I can I will choose to leave at dawn, so I can sleep tightly and when I open my eyes I will be at the destination and I can go for my activities immediately. ” I really don’t expect that to come out from him. So there is a youngster who thinks like that. How come I’m not proud of him, there is no reason to not praise his way of thinking. He always guide me so that I will always keep my dreams while I’m still young, to take all the good chances, to think how I will be in my future, in other words ‘to solve the puzzle of the future one at a time from now’. I have known him for 4 years and he is still with his high spirit and his wonderful imaginations. I never meet anyone like him, he is an aquarius with great ambition, but in the other side he is an altruistic.He is so collected in opposite with me who is still unstable. He can hide sour things behind his smile, I guess. He sometimes came by his childhood but not dwelling inside it. He likes to read comics, but it’s not the entertaining side he is looking for but what he can learn from the comics. One more thing is how many do you think the youngsters who read newspaper nowadays? I won’t count it by percentage. But I know that he is one of them. I’m so proud to be able to share many things with him, which ends up giving me inspirations. I’m sure he is a person worth to be kept. :) By the way, now he is working on his TA (let’s say it’s like final project for college students). I can ensure that he will make a wonderful program and writing. I often remind him ‘you don’t need to rush things if you know it will be something useful for many people’.

There is one of his dreams that make me feel really touched. He said to me “one day I will take you to the moon”. Before now I can’t really understand his dream because his dream made me feel that it’s way impossible. But as the time go on I get used to all of his dreams because I’m sure that every achievement start from dreams.

He has his own way of backing me up, and I’m so happy for it. He thinks deeply about my appearance, my health, and my education. I feel pretty only for him, and I want to always in a good shape so I can always support him by his side. I’m for higher education so I will be worth for him. May be a lot of people look down upon my study but by looking my experiences, I ensure myself that not everyone can get what I got. Well, everyone have their own way. Isn't it?

Even though I’m a student of Japanese literature I don’t really understand about anime or comics. Unfortunately, he likes those two things. It’s a shame that I can’t share with him about those things. Aside from that we have a something in common, and it’s about food. In my days as college student I got many experiences around Japanese culinary. For example Takoyaki, Shushi, Onigiri, etc. I made him takoyaki once but we forgot to take the picture. We have been bought onigiri together. In the last holiday we made sushi and had a meal with his family. I’m glad that I can give the fruit of my experiences to the right man, who is none other than him. :))

His surprises, supports, love word and many things really gave me happiness. But, I’m sorry for things I couldn't do and accomplished. We could be happier than we are now, but I’m glad we can get used to what we give and take from each other. 

That’s what I can tell you about this certain someone. You don’t need to know who he is, how do he looks like (except for those who already know of course). The most important thing is how I can share things about someone who has dynamic way of thinking for future. ((:

Shodou : Japanese Calligraphy

It's weekend already! don't you all love weekend? I bet you do <3

Today is really sunny Friday, isn’t it? It hasn’t been raining for three days, even though the drizzle came down in a while sometimes. I miss the rain, and I miss my home’s atmosphere with hot tea and fried banana made by mom. I got bored with my daily activities. But I have to be aware that I also have a pile of tasks. I miss the warmth of my family, but I’m sure everyone at home miss me it’s just they’d rather have me stay here to achieve a dream. 

Instead of mourning all day long, let me share the experience I had during public lecture by a Japanese professor.  Let’s start shall we :))

The lecture held by students and lecturers from Aichiken University, Japan. It was held for 2 weeks at the beginning of the 5^th term. I was so excited when I heard the announcement for this lecture. Although my holiday was cut by the lecture but nevertheless it became wonderfully unforgettable days. I will never regret joined the class. Why? Aside from the meeting with handsome Japanese, I learnt Japanese culture and language. The one I would like to tell you is when I was practicing shodou 書道. That was my first time doing shodou and I was so excited. I chose the kanji YUME which mean DREAM, because to me beside from the nice shape of the kanji , almost every achievement began from dream. There was professor Miyatani who is a strict but kind and patient figure. She taught me how to use paint brush properly. After the 10^th try I got my letter right. Honestly shodou is definitely not easy and require a special training. I’m so lucky to have the chance to try it. Someday I’ll get myself practicing the shodou again.

Professor miyatani also gave me a kind of memento in form of her self made shodou writing, which is also the kanji Yume. I framed it and put it in my room. I felt so lucky and I hope I’ll be as successful as Professor Miyatani. God bless ^.^

Shodou derived from the Kanji kaku (to write) and michi (the way). Shodou made it's way back from the 6^th century along with Kanji writing from China. The unique style of shodou begin to appeared as the Japanese invented  Hiragana and Katakana (kana) as their own unique writing. 

*Kanji is one way of Japanese to write things.

Saman Dance (Ratoh Duek Dance)

Hello guys. How's your day? Hmm. well I know, I know holiday is end. >.<

Here comes the fearful Monday following the weekend. However today’s class ran quite smoothly. Is not like the usual Monday because of a change in the schedule. The full of fun Korean class is moved from Friday’s noon to Monday at 9 am. This is better for me, so I can enjoy my weekend even longer. A side from the good news, I’d like to tell about a rather sad news. This is about my friend whom deceased last Friday. She was one of my best friend. We share same hobby, Saman dancing. This time I write especially for her. About how the first time I know the Saman and become interested to join the group till I had the chance to teach the Japanese who came to Indonesia. ((:

I saw the Saman right before my eyes for the first time at the beginning of the first term in my faculty, the faculty of cultural science, gadjah mada university. I was mesmerized by the performance of the Samantraya.  Samantraya is under the organization named Sastra Budaya, in which the members dedicate themselves into art and culture. Their specialization is in Aceh Traditional dance called Ratoh Duek (which literally means 'sits while singing').  A few days later they held an open recruitment and I eagerly enlist for the group. After joining for about three months I joined the group for some events in the university. And then after a year I have given the position as inventory manager. My task was managing the properties. That’s definitely not an easy task but the task made me more disciplined. In my times in the group I got the chances for dancing at many kind of events at the hotels, art festivals, universities in Yogyakarta, international events of Yogyakarta and even at another town. The performances were broadcasted by the local television channel and also appeared on the newspaper. It’s not a bad thing to become popular. Isn’t it?

I enjoy my days as a dancer in Samantraya then I was chosen as a choreographer for 2012 to 2013. As a choreographer I made many variations of movements and many kind of formations to make the Samantraya get even more applause at every performances. The innovations I made was appreciated by my seniors in Samantraya and also by the audiences. I’m quite happy and proud for it but it’s not stopping me to always give my best for the Samantraya. I also give my thanks to everyone in Samantraya including Shabrina Hazimi Putri as Manager and Kendyda as Leader of Samantraya. Now the Samantraya has done a change in the management, but I’m always support Samantraya so it can be better.

There was a thing made me so happy that I could cry. When my Japanese acquaintance saw us training Saman dance, they are pretty much interested to the dance. And then at the one of the activities with the people from the University of Aichiken, Japan, they asked me to teach them the dance because they saw me train my friends once. Even though I was so surprised, I taught them with pleasure. They were so funny and energetic. They said “If we visit Indonesia again in the future, we would like to have some practice with you again” and I answered “sure thing, it would be my pleasure”.  Would you all like to go for some saman dancing with me?

I learned many things with Saman, beginning from commitment, the bond as family, solidarity, and to understand each other. Samantraya is a community which taught us about the meaning of differences. Our spirits become one throughout the differences. I dance blissfully within the row dancing with my heart. I have been through harsh trainings. Even when I fell down, I always try to stand up firmly. Sweat was dripping for so many times. But the more precious thing is my new friends. And on the top of that, our hard work to bring smile to the audiences and the faithful supporters of Samantraya. I am proud to be a part  of Samantraya.

Become a Japanese Language Tutor

Hello everyone. How are you? Great right? Hmmm… By the way it’s a non-stop rainy day. I’m not complaining because I love rainy day. There’s something romantic and gloomy about it that I love. But turn out my body is disagree with my mind. I get sick easily in this kind of weather. I hate being sick, but today I feel better than yesterday. So, I’m back to writing J

I’d like to tell you a bit of my life experience. Okay, let me.

I’m not the most superior girl in my class, not a favorite student, I also not a smart ass let alone idolized just like Dian Sastrowardoyo. ((: I’m me who understand my every own step and every chances God gave to me. It’s sounds simple, I just live my life with hope and never end to think about the future. There’s a bunch of people around me who live their youth with blissful things. How about me? I’m just too busy thinking over the future. Yes, I’m dreaming all day !

My daily life in Yogyakarta makes me understand about life experience more. At the 3^rd term I encourage myself to enlist as Japanese Language Tutor. I met the qualification and passed the interview all with mixed feelings. That’s the first time I officially a tutor. After tutoring for six months at LBA (Lembaga Bahasa Asing) I decided to move for LBJ (Lembaga Bahasa Jepang). After the interview the following day I asked to start tutoring, up till now. My way of teaching is just simple. When I face kids up to senior-high-schoolers I’m going to play games. For examples the ‘snakes and ladders’ or ‘Hiragana cards’. Beside that I show them pictures associated with the day’s theme, so they won’t get bored fast. I also write on the whiteboard using colorful marker so I hope they can easily understand. :3

LBJ led me to an awesome opportunity which is tutoring the employees of Grand Aston Hotel Yogyakarta. That’s a once in a life time opportunity and I’m really grateful for being given the opportunity. To be honest the thing that moved me to write this is that, a few days ago I met three of my students whose work at the Hotel. Furthermore, since I began tutoring have been followed by my students at twitter and befriend them at facebook. :)) Yes, we don’t have to be a superstar to make many friends from any kind of people and acquire a lot of perception.

The another great opportunity I have got is I’m being chosen to be a tutor for INCULS (Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service) at a Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta. Here , I teach Indonesian language to the foreigners. Last time I tutored an Australian her name was Rebecca. She is a kind person at the end of tutoring term, she gave me a farewell chocolate. Thank you so much, Rebecca, because you know that I love Chocolate :) I hope we meet again…

The one challenge I faced is that I had to taught every kind of person beginning from elementary school kids to even the seniors. But I’m really sure that challenge will give some kind of good effect for my future career. >.< Hmm.. l am not into hypocrisy, so I’ll tell beside of experiences I also gained a plenty of fees. By tutoring I have bought my beloved iPad. I’m so happy :3

Hello all. How are you? It’s everything doing okay? Hmm.. Don’t bother to ask about my exams, what is done is done, I already do my best so now I can only pray. ((:

And…. This time I’ll share a bit of things I have learned by now. This is a simple one, it’s about email writing. For the sake of writing a decent Japanese email, I asked a lot of things from some people. Yosakoi Festival Surabaya

Hello everyone !! How’s life? Mine pretty went well, so I hope yours too :))

Now, I want to tell you about my most favorite hobby other than reading, which is *DANCING* I loved dance since I was little. Not just traditional ones but also modern dance. Therefore, I often participated in modern dance competitions. I don’t want to brag but I’ve earned a lot of trophies. Not only doing the dance but I can also create my own dance moves. As for the Bali dance, I’ve been got into a lot of competitions and also performing at many art festivals. Until now my interest for dance is still as great as it were when I was little. Yey !

I got myself interested to the Japanese dance just as I began studied Japanese literature. I joined the Japanese dance community in Yogyakarta, named D’Joh (D’ Japan Odori Holic). Djoh consist of people who want to learn Japanese dance. Not only the students of Japanese literature but also people from another profession. J I enjoy it so much being a member of Djoh. The instructor herself is a Japanese. Her name is Shiki. She trains as good as she dance. In the process the things I’ve earned other than dancing skill are knowledge around Japanese language and culture. And I won’t forget about the bond that has been formed until now.

 Yosakoi is one of the dance we have been taught by Mbak Shiki. Yosakoi (よさこい) is a unique style of dance that originated in Japan. Yosakoi started in the city of Kochi in 1954. I’ve been participated in Yosakoi Festival Surabaya for two times at 2011 & 2012 !! For the both we won by the favorite competitor category. Yey Yey. It was so amazing. We are now aiming for the first place in the next competition. Ganbatte !!

The Birth of Culture

Hello people! How’s your week? I’m really sorry for not blogging for so long, it’s been an exams month, so it’s kinda crazy month for me. But now I’m officially back and ready to tell about everything. :))

Crazy schedules is crazy! I’ve been busy the whole week, there’s some project which need my full attention. Oh how I miss holiday! No no no…  “love letters from lecturers has arrived” hahaha. I have read many books about the culture. One of the most inspiring book is a “Culture; Studi Kebudayaan” by Chris Jenks. Cool right!! I love that book so much and I know for sure you guys gonna love it too! Right??

Dear, people who are interested in culture. Now I’m going to write my opinion about the birth of culture. Not an article or paper. Just a simple inscription. :D

The Birth of Culture

Men and culture has a close relationship and cannot be separated. Culture is the product of men minds and culture of men that run it. Culture is the whole system of ideas, actions, and the work of humans in the context of a society that men have with learning.

Community as a place and culture as the content are two components attached to each other. Every society has a culture and every culture must be owned by the community. Culture is born from the people with learning. Men who have a new language can be said that civilized men. Men environment reflects and affects a culture. Beside environment, language is one universal element of culture. With language, men can deliver culture to the next generation. So that people can preserve a culture.

In relation to the environment, men life is an organism (living organism). The establishment of a private person affected by the environment even in the extreme can be said, every person comes from an environment, both vertical (genetics, tradition) and horizontal environment (geographic, physical, social).

Men and culture is one bond that cannot be separated in this life. Men as God's most perfect creatures create their own culture and preserve it. Environment is a place where men run their culture and it also gives characteristics to the culture of  a community.

Men are living organisms who cannot be separated from an environment affect. Therefore men must adapt with their environment. It is also environment which affects the way of men thinking so that it makes they can behave in the adaptation process. From that process, a culture is created.

          The nation of Indonesia, Malaysia, America, Europe, and the other nations have one culture (it means, culture is universal). But every culture has special characteristics correspond with each of culture background. For example although all nations need clothes, house, and food, but the shapes are different.
